Alexander Volkanovsky can make history at UFC 284 on Feb. 11 as he seeks to become the fifth two-time champion in UFC history. Fighting in front of family and friends in his own backyard, the Australian faces a serious challenge from UFC 284 lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Makhachev’s lightweight title fight will take place in the Australian city of Perth Arena RAC.

Since joining the MMA in 2015, Makhachev has won 12 straight and has a record of 13 wins and 1 loss. The 31-year-old has 11 submission wins and has absorbed the fewest punches per minute (0.95) in UFC history. Most recently, Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira in October to capture the then-vacant MMA lightweight title.

The champion will enter this match without a familiar face. Former champion Khabib Numagomedov will not be in his corner as he wants to stay away from Ultimate Fighting Championship. However, they had a game plan for the Volkanovski fight before Khabib’s absence.

MMA featherweight champion Volkanovski has won all 12 UFC 284fights. He beat Max Holloway to win the title in 2019 and made four title defenses. Now he wants to challenge himself at lightweight. MORE: Tune in to watch ESPN+’s exclusive MMA PPV

On the ground, Makhachev was a dangerous fighter. Volkanovski is a tough striker. Something has to give.

The latter stopped thinking about the game and told the All-Stars that his skills can surpass Makhachev’s offensive abilities. “I think it’s going to be more of a one-on-one fight,” Volkanovsky said, via MMA News. “Obviously he’s going to shoot early with my moves and all that… he’s going to be a little uncomfortable with my timing and all that…

“I think the first round will be more of a fight, with scrambles, all kinds of things. Maybe a little dirty. So in the second round I think it’s more about standing, I want to put my hands on him…but I’m going five rounds and bad position…so I think I’ll finish . “

Volkanovski vs. Makhachova: absolute dominance and double crown status
The MMA is heading to Australia for the big MMA main event. Aleksandrs Volkanovskis (25-1) and Islam Makhachov (23-1) will meet in Perth in a fight that will go down in history.

While the main event isn’t the one grabbing the most attention and headlines, on paper it’s one of, if not the biggest ever, as it’s the first time the UFC 284 has seen the world’s pound-for-pound No.1. In the fight for the title, the heavyweight boxer will face the world number two.

The big one is the MMA featherweight champion and Australian hero, proving that no one can stop him as he defeated Max Holloway, Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega and Chan Sun Jung in three fights. Meanwhile, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s friend and defending lightweight champion Makhachov was in the ring after an impressive victory over Charles Oliveira for the belt.

That makes for a world-class fight, even in an era where a MMA gold medal doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the best in the world at your weight class. However, heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou recently opted to become a free agent rather than accept a contract with the promotion.

NSW-based Volkanovski (25-1) has an unblemished record since entering the MMA in 2016, winning all 12 of his fights inside the Octagon. He used a style that relied on high-intensity striking combined with seemingly unlimited cardio, a strategy that led him to the 145-pound title, which he successfully defended four times.

Makhachev (23-1), meanwhile, lost his second MMA fight in 2015. But he’s been on fire ever since.

Makhachov’s style echoed that of his training legend, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who used aggressive grappling to set up relentless ground attacks near the finish. He has won 11 games in a row.

Makhachev is the BetMGM -350 favorite. Volkanovski (+260) 82% of the total bet, and Makhachov 52% of the total bet.

The co-main event of the evening featured an intermediate title fight between Mexico’s Jair Rodriguez (15-3, 1NC). Josh Emmett (18-2) Sacramento, CA.

Rodriguez is -160 favorite at BetMGM with 73% of the bankroll, while Emmett (+130) has 56% of the total.
