Instagram Threads: Threads saw a surge of interest when it launched, attracting Instagram users to the new text-based social app. The excitement, however, was short-lived, and the app’s active user count quickly dropped off.

According to recent data, Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) is still growing, while Instagram’s Threads app for Android has seen a sharp decline in daily active users. The Threads Android app reportedly peaked on July 7 with 49.3 million daily active users worldwide, according to analytics company Similarweb. On August 7, though, that figure had fallen to 10.3 million.
When Threads first went live, it experienced a spike in popularity that drew users from Instagram to the new text-based social app. The excitement, however, was short-lived, and the number of active users of the app rapidly decreased. Despite the initial enthusiasm, Threads has had difficulty sustaining user engagement over time.
Comparatively, X (previously Twitter) boasts over 100 million daily active users on just Android, with users spending roughly 25 minutes daily on the platform. On the other hand, threads saw a decrease in the amount of time that users were actively participating from an average of 14 minutes globally (and nearly 21 minutes in the US) on July 7 to just 3 minutes by August 7.
Despite an impressive launch, Threads hasn’t been able to sustain user interest and engagement like X. The app reportedly lacks the compelling content that keeps X users interested, such as discussions and comments on various topics, including criticism of X owner Elon Musk.
Although Threads may still have the potential to develop into a significant social platform, it must give users strong incentives to use the app regularly. The information shows the difficulties Threads has in becoming a serious player in the social media space.
To keep users coming back for more, Threads will need to innovate and improve its features. Further advancements and improvements in the social media space will probably be motivated by competition between these platforms.
